JIM Thatcher from Once Read Bookshop in Crediton recently visited Yeoford Primary School to donate £150 to the school towards books for the school library.

The money was raised from the sale of books donated by Sue Read’s family, Sue having lived in the village.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Sue Read's books were donated to Jim and he wanted to do something lovely and positive in her memory from the proceeds.

“Everyone here at Yeoford very much appreciates it.

“We are planning on purchasing The Bookery's World Book Day 2025 Top 20 titles for all the children to enjoy and to continue to foster a love for reading.”

Jim said that he was delighted to present the money to the school in memory of Sue, who he described as a “valued member of the Crediton community”.

He added: “We have also suggested that a raffle could be arranged at the School, allowing the winner to collect 10 Free children's books from Once Read Bookshop.”

Sue was the former editor and one of the five founders of the Crediton Courier.

She was a huge part of the Courier and community for almost 50 years, passing away aged 80 on Sunday, November 17.

Sue was the inspirational leader of the team which produced the Courier, firstly monthly, then fortnightly, then weekly and digitally, until her retirement at the beginning of last year.

The Courier celebrated its 50th birthday in December and it was incredibly sad that Sue did not reach this landmark milestone, which she was so looking forward to.

Sue was the recipient of the Crediton Town Council plate for services to the town in May 2000 and the Rotary Club of Crediton Citizen of the Year Award in 2017 alongside many other accolades for her work for the benefit of the Crediton community.
