A ROAD in Crediton has been closed to traffic this afternoon, Wednesday, June 19, due to a gas leak.

Emergency gas works are now taking place in Park Road, Crediton, but the road closure is causing significant traffic issues.

Queen Elizabeth’s School has announced that for the duration of the road closure, which is expected to be Tuesday, June 25, all Year 7 and 8 bus students will be collected/dropped off at the Western Road campus with staff escorting pupils between sites.

Hundreds of pupils will have to walk each morning and evening to and from the Barnfield campus site to the Western Road site.

The walking route between the two campus sites is more than a half-a-mile in distance using some very steep steps.

Motorists are able to access Barnfield, Butt Parks, Spruce Park, Cockles Rise and other areas of the town using Dean Street or Bowden Hill but these are not suitable for large vehicles.

The contractors are hopeful that the road will be open before June 25.

Previously there were some long-term road closures along other parts of Park Road due to gas leaks and subsequent repairs to the gas pipes.
