CREDITON Town Council has given a sustainable prom outfit project at Queen Elizabeth’s School a grant of £480.
Launched recently by a committee of two dozen year 10 students, “Pre-Loved Prom” seeks to reuse donated eveningwear to cut down on fashion waste and make prom season more affordable.
It is the latest venture of the successful “Ecothreads”, a pre-loved school uniform store founded by QE sixth-formers last autumn with the support of charity Involve Mid Devon.
The Pre-Loved Prom project has used the council grant to buy as many as 42 dresses and 21 suits. It now has a large amount of new and used stock available.
“Having desirable items available from the start will be a huge benefit for the success of the first year,” Involve Mid Devon Crediton Community Builder Tamlyn Fraiquin said.
“The project focuses on sustainability and supporting our families financially.
“We also hope that by using the Pre-Loved Prom service, our families will not be spending hundreds on prom outfits that will be worn once.”
Under the scheme, outfits will be loaned out for £20 with £10 refunded after they are returned in the same condition.
Johnsons Dry Cleaners is providing free dry cleaning for all the clothes.
Pre-Loved Prom’s first rental day will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 9.30am to 1pm at QE Western Road campus via the main reception.
Students will have a chance to try outfits on and rent clothes. Cash is preferred.
If you would like to make a donation, you can drop off dresses, suits, ties, shoes and accessories at QE Barnfield reception, QE Western Road reception or Crediton Library.
Donations should be clean and in decent condition. Small repairs can be made.
Monetary contributions for the group to buy prom outfits online can be made by emailing [email protected] in the first instance.
