HITTISLEIGH residents have replaced two of the parish’s wooden signposts.
The community was spurred into action by fear the previous rotting signposts could be taken away and swapped for minimalist metal ones.
Led by John Painter and Chris Wood, they replaced the first of the two at Binneford Cross.
Alex Scougall, who has lived in Hittisleigh for four decades, was impressed by Mr Painter’s woodworking skills and asked him to design a replacement for the second signpost at Dennis Down Cross.

He bought the wood for the new sign and dismantled the old one, while Mr Painter reused and restored the old raised lettering for the new replica.
Messrs Painter, Wood and Scougall’s work was backed by Hittisleigh Parish Council, particularly its chair Beryl Watson.
