PLANS to turn a disused building and two adjoining garages on Deep Lane in Crediton into a house have been given the thumbs-up.
Alan Ladd of ARG Property Devon Ltd can now convert them into a two-storey, one-bedroom home.
The building will only need “very little structural alteration”, planning documents say. The pitch of the roof will be altered by seven degrees to give more headroom on the first floor.
The new home will have double-glazed timber windows, a parking space for one car and storage space for bins and bicycles.
Planning documents had said the empty rendered stone and brick building dates from the 1930s, but a member of the public said it was built in the 18th century as part of the Newcombes Estate.
In any case, it is not listed, and Mid Devon District Council (MDDC)’s conservation officer said the conversion “would not be harmful”.
Another person was certain bats were roosting in the building, but no evidence of this was found.
The flat-roofed garages next to it were constructed more recently in the 20th century from brick.
Granting permission, MDDC said the location is “sustainable” and “suitable for the development of housing”, as it is close to public transport, shops and other facilities and is inside the town’s defined settlement boundary.
You can see the application on the Mid Devon District Council website under reference 24/01219/FULL.
