A CREDITON High Street bookshop is set to celebrate this year’s Independent Bookshop Week with giveaways and a social event.

The Bookery will kick off the week, which lasts from Saturday, June 15 to Saturday, June 22, by giving away a free £5 book token to its first 100 customers who buy a book.

Then, on Wednesday, June 19, there will be free children's craft activities in the shop from 3pm so parents and carers can browse whilst youngsters are kept busy.

Later the same day, the bookshop will host a social evening as part of The Big Book Group from 7pm.

This event is taking place nationally in independent bookshops and aims to have as many readers across the country taking part as possible.

The Bookery has chosen The Golden Mole and Other Vanishing Treasure by Katherine Rundell to discuss on the night.

“This brilliant writer was previously named author of the year at the British Book Awards, the first time in six years that a children's writer has picked up the accolade,” a spokesperson said.

“Now in this new adult book, longlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing, she tells of the staggering lives and threats to some of the world's most endangered animals, from the Devon coasts and woods to the African savannah.

“Book group members get a discount off The Golden Mole, and those attending the evening will be offered a discount on the other books on the Indie Book Awards shortlist too.

“The Indie Book Awards are the only book awards curated and judged by independent booksellers.

“They showcase the best paperback books of the summer across four categories: fiction, non-fiction, children’s fiction and children's picture books.

“The winners of the awards will be announced on Thursday, June 20. Will The Bookery’s chosen book The Golden Mole be one of them?

“Whether you are a book club member or just curious we would love to have you join us.”

If you would like to attend the Wednesday social evening, you can contact The Bookery by emailing [email protected] or telephoning 01363 774740.
