BRINGING together three of Crediton’s most long established performing artists, this “One-Off” production is a special Easter celebration of the world’s oldest story.
“Songlines” is a weave of Story and Song from our African, Indian and Celtic Roots.
It will take place at Black Dog Village Hall from 8pm on Good Friday, April 18.
It is widely believed that Africa was the cradle of all mankind. This personal realisation of an African genesis is inspired by the stories and poetry of the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
As the creation myth unfolds, a sacred text of song, word and rhythm reveals a three-way covenant between God, Humankind and the Earth from which all beings are created.
The performers are David Evans, Ayodele Scott, Anna Tanvir and Maninder Singh.
David Evans was born in Nigeria but attended QECC in Crediton as a border where he first discovered an aptitude for acting in the school productions.
He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and went on to act in the Company.
David returned to live Crediton in 1984 while he trained as teacher in the University of Exeter. He never moved away and in 1990 founded Imùlè Theatre.
This was, and remains, a multi-cultural theatre company concerned with environmental issues and the impact of globalisation on indigenous cultures.
David has taught in QECC where both his children Miҫa and Ieuan attended school.
Ayodele Scott was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone and first started earning money and gifts for his performances in the style of Agbo Play at the age of 12. Prior to coming to England, Ayodele gained national awards for his acting and dancing.
On coming to Leeds University on a scholarship, Ayo found himself working with some of world’s most influential theatre directors including Peter Brook, Augusto Boal, Jertzy Grotowski and Wole Soyinka.
Ayo has worked with David in Imùlè since 1993, touring schools, higher education and community venues. His children also attended QECC. To mark a new era in their creative partnership, in 2024 David and Ayodele created a company called Agbo Play.
Ayo is a long time member of “Baka Beyond”, the Afro-Celtic and World music group which tours nationally and internationally.
Anna Tanvir is a singer-harpist and writer of Irish/Indian origin. Born in Dublin, Anna's childhood was spent in Ireland, Devon and India.
Over these itinerant years, she developed a repertoire of world music, singing, and playing instruments from an early age. Anna studied music at Dartington College of Arts and the Royal Academy of Music, London.
Despite having a distinguished career on the world’s stages, Anna has a strong association with Crediton. She taught in QECC and worked in the boarding house. Anna also taught in Copplestone Primary School and led Crediton’s Melody D Choir.
In 2016 Anna joined David to create Imùlè Theatre’s award winning production of Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea”. Nowadays, Anna lives in Ireland where she performs regularly for Indeceltic with her husband, Maninder.
Maninder Singh is a singer, composer and producer. He has worked in various musical styles, including experimental funk, rock Jazz- Blues, minimalism, Reggae and R and B-Jazz style.
Recently, Maninder was awarded a grant from Carlow Arts in Ireland to record, produce and release the song “Mayfly”.
Born in Dehradun, India to Sikh parents, Maninder learnt to play tabla at a very young age, and accompanied his aunt singing at her live performances. He is currently working on a new album and touring as a singer and guitarist for Indeceltic.
