A NEW initiative to tackle food insecurity and promote sustainable, healthy eating is to launch in Crediton, thanks to a £24,000 grant from the Devon Community Foundation’s Large Grants Fund.

Involve Mid Devon, in partnership with Queen Elizabeth School (QE), has secured funding to support the wider community.

This project will help families overcome barriers to accessing and preparing nutritious meals while also creating a welcoming space for skill-building, learning, and community connection.

At the heart of the project is the creation of a Community Cooking Hub at QE, which will serve as a dedicated space for learning and hands-on workshops.

Families and individuals will have the opportunity to gain confidence in the kitchen, develop essential cooking skills, and access valuable resources. QE’s facilities, outstanding staff and its role as a trusted community hub make it the ideal setting for this initiative.

Paula Smith, Headteacher, QE School, said: "We are delighted to open our facilities to support this vital project. At QE, we are committed to helping our families and strengthening the wider community. This initiative reflects our values, and we’re proud to be part of something that will have a lasting impact."

The project will also work alongside local charities and voluntary organisations, including Crediton Foodbank, Community Larder, CHAT, Crediton Library, The Bookery, and The Turning Tides Project.

By collaborating with these groups, the initiative will focus on the whole community to provide practical support to those facing food insecurity, the rising cost of living, and challenges in accessing nutritious meals.

Tamlyn Fraiquin, Project Manager - Communities that Can, Involve Mid Devon, thanked Devon Community Foundation.

"This funding will make a real difference to our local families. By teaching practical cooking skills and encouraging sustainable food habits, we’re helping to build a healthier, happier and more resilient community."
