THERE is good news for Crediton, the closure of the Crediton branch of Lloyds Bank has been delayed yet again.

The branch was due to close on Thursday, July 4, then on Wednesday, October 30, but Lloyds Bank says it will now not close until Wednesday, November 20.

No reason has been given for this further delay but previously it was understood that it could be to enable time for the installation of a paying in facility machine in the town.

A notice in the branch reads: “We’re closing this branch soon.

“Please come and talk to us.

“We’re here to help and support you before and after this branch closes.

“This branch will close on November 20, 2024.

“We can help you at any branch, including 234 High Street, Exeter EX4 3NL and 46 Fore Street, Tiverton EX16 6LF.”

In July 2023, Lloyds Banking Group announced it intended to close the branch and since submitted a planning application to Mid Devon District Council for the removal of signage, the internal and external machines, etc.

In recent times Lloyds has blamed a drop in customer transactions and an increase of more people using internet banking as the reason behind the closures.

However, consumer advocates for local bank branches say that such closures harm less mobile customers and people who struggle to access internet banking.

Trade unions say that such closures deny vulnerable customers, the elderly and small businesses of essential services.

The Crediton branch, at 30 High Street, Crediton, is currently open from 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday.

It operates a counter service, travel money facility, paying-in machine and an external Cashpoint.

When it was announced that the branch would be closing, Bruce Evans, the Chairman of Crediton Chamber of Commerce, said the decision was “very disappointing”.

He said: "The news that the last bank in Crediton is closing is very disappointing for the town.

"Although most banking can be done at the Post Office, not having a physical bank in the town is a short sighted move from Lloyds.

"Luckily Crediton is a lively, resilient community and the businesses and inhabitants will continue to thrive despite this setback."
