CHRISTINE Marshall, a member of Crediton Bowling Club, has got her year of duties underway as Bowls Devon Ladies President with a Ladies Section game against Section 8 at Lee Moor.
It was a beautiful journey through countryside over Dartmoor to reach the green and it was great to see so many familiar faces after all these months of Covid restrictions.
The day was even greater fun for a Jack Russell terrier who decided to keep invading the green and running off with the Jack!
This was followed by a second Mixed President’s game at Honiton where the ladies were joined by the Devon men for a very enjoyable game followed by the delights of a cream tea, a luxury not enjoyed for many a month!
Another mixed game took place at St Thomas who, like Honiton, are celebrating the centenary of their Club. What an achievement!
Rinks from Crediton, Pinces, North Tawton and Okehampton made up the Devon team but they proved to be no match for the St Thomas team who proved to be far more “at home" on their own exceptionally challenging green!
In Crediton the National Over 55’s Ladies Pairs teaming of Muriel Scott and Liz Smerdon have progressed through to the Area Semi-Finals after beating a pair from Ottery St Mary and now face a pair from either Plymstock or Kings in the next round.
In the National Ladies Top Club, Crediton faced opposition from another North Devon side with the opponents this time being Barnstaple United Services. This time home advantage paid off as Crediton won all four disciplines and now await Topsham or Ottery in the Area Semi-Final.
The National Over 60’s Mixed Two Rink (Tony Alcock Trophy) took place on Sunday in awful weather conditions. If the weather intervenes the rules of the competition state that the result will stand if at least 10 ends have been played. Fortunately Crediton were ahead of Barnstaple at this point and therefore have progressed into the following round.
Finally the Woman’s County Trials took place and Joan Martin, Muriel Scott and Liz Smerdon have all been selected for the Devon squad.
A special mention and congratulations must be given to Amy Simpson who has also been selected and will be making her debut for the team when Devon play Cornwall tomorrow (July 10).
So whether it’s a National competition, a County competition or just an internal Crediton bowls competition you can guarantee there is always something going on at the green in Newcombe’s Meadow.
Next weeks copy of your Courier (July 16) will give an update on what’s going on in the Men’s competitions and will also give details of the friendly fixtures which have now started.
The club looks forward to seeing more of you supporting the events taking place.
