LAST weekend, September 2 and 3, showed the depth of quality in Crediton Bowling Club as both the Men and the Ladies battled it out to become Kings and Queens of the green.
On the Saturday it was the turn of the men with Richard Ellis taking both the Championship title with a 21-13 victory over Neil Thomas and then following this up with a 27-16 victory over Mike Haywood in the Handicap competition.
Gary Ayley defeated Allan Gibb 14-11 in the Two Woods and in the Three Woods Terry Chamberlain had a 21-16 victory over Pete Sheppard.
Pete was soon to get his hands on a trophy as he defeated Eric Halliday 21-9 in the Non Cup competition open to all those still to gain a competition win in the Club.
The Pairs winners were Trevor Newbery and Graham Tucker who defeated Richard Ellis and Melvyn Trick by 18-13.
On the Sunday it was the Ladies turn and it’s fair to say there was one outstanding individual who walked away with three titles.
Jackie Hemming Anthony joined at the beginning of the season to play a higher level of bowls than her previous club and has been a great asset to the Ladies teams.
She managed three victories by defeating Helen Ellis 16-7 in the Two Woods and then 26-21 in the Handicap.
She then defeated Anne Sullivan 21-11 in the Non Cup. The top prize of the Championship went to Nikki Payne who produced a magnificent last wood to claim a 22-16 victory over Liz Smerdon.
I have been made to eat my words in the Men’s Over 60’s League as the A team have come back from nowhere to be topping the league with one match to play.
Results went their way last week as they defeated Tiverton West End 8-0 and the side in second place beat the top side.
This paved the way for the side to jump from third to first with just Heavitree to play!
The B team ended their season with a 6-2 defeat away to Fenton Eagles but still finished third in their league.
The C team finished a really creditable fourth in their league despite a thumping 8-0 defeat away to already crowned champions Tiverton Park.
The friendly sides continued their good run with victories over Culm Vale by 84-53 and Tiverton Borough by 81-71. There are 18 days left before the green is shut for the winter but there are still 10 more chances to catch the bowls at Newcombes.
