I FOUND myself having to spend a week's respite residence at the St Lawrence Residential Home on Churchill Drive, Crediton. I dreaded the thought.
However, I was so wrong. St Lawrence is a fine example of how a nursing home should be run.
From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome, greeted by the manager, a fine, caring lady. I was shown to my room, small but comfortable and the other facilities of the home, which were excellent.
There was a team of lady carers who were all doing as much as they could for you. The catering staff were, again, superb and produced excellent home cooking on a very low budget.
Those visiting for a day's caring were, again, looked after by a dedicated team doing more than their best to make the day enjoyable for all. The drivers bringing these day visitors were a cheerful, helpful band of men.
Many of those attending St Lawrence must find life very lonely. If you have a spare moment, call in and say "hello"; you will be more than welcome.
I got to know Doug who has been at St Lawrence for the past few years. He suffered a stroke and his main interest is looking after the front gardens - I wish he would do mine!
He is an example of what you can do under severe difficulties. An example to us all.
Thank you all at St Lawrence. I hope I haven't left anyone out. You all deserve a medal.
