THE children in Year 5 and Year 6 at Hayward’s School enjoyed a VE themed day just before Christmas.
The children had the opportunity to walk from Crediton Railway Station to school, replicating the journey of an evacuee during World War Two.
Children got into role brilliantly, having travelled from as far as Edinburgh, Southampton and London!
They had the opportunity to explore how they would feel as an evacuee, thinking about what and who they would have left behind, writing postcards home, considering views from a different perspective.
The school had a guest speaker from Crediton Community Bookshop who spoke about her family’s evacuee experience too.
The children also shared their term’s-worth of work with their families, in an exhibition which spread throughout the year 5 and 6 unit; it was transformed into a museum and included a replica Anderson shelter and a 1940s tea room! The children also had the opportunity to show off their amazing singing and LindyHop dances.
Excitingly the school also hosted visits on the back playground from a range of World War Two vehicles, which the children loved exploring.
Thanks were extended to Miss Down and all of the staff in Year 5 and Year 6 for organising such a fantastic day.
