THERE used to be a hugely successful local market at Hittisleigh every month - until covid restrictions put an end to all that socialising - and the excellent bacon butties.
When several people began asking if it was ever going to happen again, the Village Hall Committee decided to give it a go, especially as a lot of money needs to be raised for refurbishment.
Committee chairman, Kate Hudson, said the priority was the roof. “We have a whole list of work that needs doing,” she said.
At this month’s market on Saturday, June 10, there were plants which almost sold out, a bric-a-brac stall with garden tools, china, and lots of other good things as well as an excellent bakery which sold out. Outside was another stall with plants to raise funds for Hittisleigh Parish Church.
The kitchen was kept incredibly busy, selling out before the end of the 40 rolls, big sausages and some 50 lots of bacon.
Kate said that at the next market - July 8 - there would be a meat stall and someone selling preserves.
“If anyone wishes to come to sell vegetables and maybe fruit and someone willing to bring a cheese stall, please contact 01647 24101 or email: [email protected],” she said.
The hall was built almost 140 years ago as a school. It was bought by the village for £350 in 1950.
