FAMILY and friends of David Simms of East Welland Down, Sandford and Paul Spear of Dawlish gathered at the Waie Inn, Zeal Monachorum, on Easter Saturday, at what they believed was an engagement lunch.

They were shocked to find that the occasion was David and Paul’s Civil Partnership.

The moving non-religious ceremony had some music chosen by the couple to reflect their interests.

Everyone who attended was surprised to find out that the ceremony was the first civil partnership to take place at the Waie Inn.

The ceremony was followed by a superb four-course lunch.

David explained: "Sue Burrow and the staff at the Waie Inn did an amazing job from start to finish, it was no wonder it is regarded as a great wedding venue.

"We would like to thank Susan’s of Crediton for the flowers for the occasion and the cake, which was iced by Sue Perryman Kent.

"We would also like to thank Alan Quick for taking the photographs and everyone who helped in any way to make our day such a special one."
