A TALK on new research “transforming our understanding of the Roman road network in Devon and Cornwall” is coming up in Crediton.
Landscape archaeologist Dr Chris Smart of the University of Exeter will speak at the Boniface Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday, January 13.
Archaeologists using laser scans have found North Tawton, not Exeter, was the centre of a Roman road network that “spanned across Devon and Cornwall and connected significant settlements”.
There was previously little evidence for long-distance Roman roads west of Exeter.
Entry costs £2 for Crediton Area History and Museum Society (CAHMS) members and £5 for non-members. Membership is £15 a year. Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in admission.
The Boniface Centre can be found on Church Lane in Crediton. There are free car parking spaces at the rear of Crediton Parish Church.
CAHMS hosts talks on the second Monday of each month from September to May.
