FLOWER and homecraft shows are a tradition which Zeal Monachorum Village Hall has been continuing since its inception in the mid-1950s.
In the past, with no mains electricity in the village until the 1960s and television in its infancy, hobbies such as gardening and crafts were vital to provide relaxation from long days working in agriculture and factories.
While times have changed, this tradition is still valid in allowing people to show off their skills and garden successes, not just in the hall but on social media.
Saturday, March 22 is the day of the flower and homecraft show, with entries accepted between 10am and 12pm. The event will open to the public from 2.30pm. Admission costs £1 with children going free.
Are you a first timer? Why not give it a go, it’s easy! There is no charge for exhibiting and you can enter up two exhibits in each class.
Advice will be available in the morning if you are uncertain, for example, about which class your daffodils should be in or how to display them. One tip is you need to bring your own vases or jam jars to put your flowers in.
All sections are open to adults and children but will be judged separately.
There are classes for photographs, needlework, cookery as well as flowers and shrubs.
Even if you have nothing to show, it’s worth coming in the afternoon to see the beautiful displays, enjoy some refreshments, take part in the prize draw and bid in the auction - when many people have donated their exhibits to raise money for the village hall.
