A COMMUNITY interest company is seeking planning permission to use a strip of land near Crediton railway station as a “community space”.

The Turning Tides Project, which aims to give equal access to music, the arts and life in general to people with learning disabilities and autism, took over the site off Four Mills Lane in 2020.

Previously used for allotments until 2015, the project now uses it to grow vegetables and produce for its cafe at the railway station, and for outdoor crafting and music.

If the plans are approved, the CIC would build single-storey sheltered structures, an outdoor performing space and install a “small amount” of solar panels.

The structures would be “mostly handmade” from reclaimed and “upcycled” materials and timber, and built around the site in addition to several existing structures.

They include a multi-use timber shed, a wood-crafting shelter, a rain shelter, an outdoor prep shelter and composting toilets.

Mid Devon District Council will decide whether to grant or refuse planning permission at a later date.
