CREDITON Foodbank is launching a new initiative designed to empower clients and create a more sustainable model of community food support.

The Pantry, which will launch in June 2025, will offer clients more choice in the food they receive, while encouraging small steps towards financial independence.

The Pantry will run alongside the Foodbank’s existing services, inspired by other similar UK projects.

Clients in crisis will still receive free emergency food parcels, but those who are ready and able will be able to access The Pantry for a small weekly contribution of £5.

“This isn’t about replacing the Foodbank – it’s about evolving to meet the changing needs of our community,” said Helen Moores, Coordinator of Crediton Foodbank. “We’re proud to continue offering support to anyone in crisis, while also recognising that many of our longer-term clients are ready to take the next step.”

The Pantry will give clients the dignity of choice. Food items will be colour-coded, and clients will select items based on household size and need, guided by volunteers. A trial will launch in coming weeks with a small group of clients to test and refine the system before wider rollout.

The Foodbank team is inviting local residents, donors, and supporters to share their views on The Pantry by completing a short online survey.

The link to the survey and more information can be found on the Foodbank website at: https://creditonfoodbank.org.uk/introducing-the-pantry-a-new-way-to-support-our-community/

“We want The Pantry to reflect the hopes, needs and ideas of the people it serves,” said Helen.

The Foodbank is also offering sessions for volunteers. Regular pantry sessions are planned for Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, with pre-booked client slots and continued provision of crisis food support and deliveries.

Crediton Foodbank remains committed to supporting anyone facing food insecurity. With The Pantry, the charity hopes to stretch its resources further.
