CHULMLEIGH Community College Year 9 pupils James Dean and Alfie, and Year 8 pupil David Dean (James’ brother) organised a charity event during Cleft Palate Awareness Week, in order to raise money for children with the condition in this country and abroad.

The boys took assemblies where they explained the condition, and James was brave enough to show his baby photographs and share with pupils what it is like to live with a cleft lip and palate.

They hoped to raise a “mile of pennies” and encouraged pupils to take in any loose change that they had, and created a “smile display” with the donations.

They were delighted with the result, raising a fantastic £279.35 for CLAPA, the Cleft Lip and Palate Association.
