STEVE and I moved back to Crediton in 2017, after living away from the Town for some 42 years, yet in many ways it only seems like yesterday that we were young and carefree, without the responsibility of children, leaving for pastures new with thoughts of what may or may not be.
We loved the Community back then and on our return one of the things that pleased us the most was the High Street, one could still park free of charge on both sides of the road and several family businesses remained and were just as we remembered them.
Friendly, efficient, there to serve with nothing being too much trouble, loyal to the Community even though more than likely deep down they may be struggling financially in the current climate or facing other difficulties.
Probably, like many of us, as I get older, I do a lot more thinking about life.
What constitutes a good community? A place where one feels safe, loved, respected, valued and cared for.
When we first left Crediton in 1982 I had no thoughts of the Christian faith in my head.
Although I had been Christened, Confirmed and Married in a church, it was only weddings or at Christmas to keep my Godmother happy, that I ever attended church, but now many years down the line church attendance is central to my whole being.
Whilst journeying through life, I have been dealt many horrendous blows as well as the usual ups and downs.
Looking back I am so grateful that I was given the opportunity to understand faith by learning more about Jesus, from those I encountered, discovering a God, who loves and cares deeply for me.
Such a privilege, as in many places throughout the world this is not possible without fear of persecution or ridicule.
The 1st century followers of Jesus had no such privilege yet they stuck their necks out showing by example the simple way of faith.
Two thousand years later there are many people in this community who can point us to a life knowing Jesus which, I guarantee can help with our journey through life.
One way Christians Together in Crediton witness and live out faith is by organising events in the Community such as, instigating the Food Bank in it’s infancy, the Fun Day in the Park or the Good Friday Walk of Witness, to show that God’s love is available for all to experience.
Last week we were fortunate to be helping at the Holiday Club for Primary age children at the Congregational Church.
In a fun, noisy, joyous and loving way, seeds were being sown in the hearts of those children as well as within helpers.
The various churches in our amazing community have different traditions but all witness to the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In the Bible, the Prophet Jeremiah speaks as God’s messenger, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.
God will nurture and prosper those who turn to Him.
