A FIRST World War drama featuring “heart-wrenching” true stories of people from Crediton is coming up in the town.

The Crediton Operatic and Dramatic Society (CODS) show “The Men Who Marched Away” will be performed from Thursday, February 13 to Saturday, February 15 at Crediton Congregational Church.

“Harriet Setter leads a contented life in Crediton with all her family,” Tasha Currie of CODS said.

“Then in July 1914 in far-away Sarajevo, Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated, the match to the tinderbox that was Europe at the time.

“Within days, war is declared between the major powers in Europe, gradually spreading beyond.

“Harriet Setter fears what will become of her family. Local girl Gertrude Stemson also fears for the love of her life, Harriet’s son Harold, who she is destined to marry.

“As the war progresses, all nine of Harriet’s sons leave the peace of Devon for the battlefront.

“Will they all survive? Will they return with life-changing injuries? How will Harriet cope with the crippling anxieties over her sons and other family members?
