RAIN postponed for one day Tedburn St Mary Cricket Club's 25th anniversary game until the weather was much improved.

An anniversary cake had been made by Sarah Toms of Cheriton Bishop, cut at teatime during the 2 x 20 over match by the captains of both teams - Bryan Rainbow for the Legends, Steve Baker for the current team. Commemorative ties had been made, too.

Former players were invited and it was hoped that one now in Japan and another in Aberdeen would be able to get there, but neither managed to do so.

Each of the three former club chairmen were playing that afternoon. Current chairman is Alex Williams. Tedburn plays in the Buckley Cup competition, which the club won last year, taking all 10 games and "friendlies".

Other teams that play in the cup are Yeoford, Spreyton, Hatherleigh and Belstone. Tedburn C C hopes to expand its Colts' side next season. Former Colts played in the anniversary game.

Years ago there was a Whitestone and Tedburn St Mary Cricket Club. Games were played on the Fair Field at Whitestone, then at Heath Cross on the edge of Tedburn. The club later moved to Oak Farm, then owned by Mr Wilson and became Tedburn C C. But the new A30 road came through and the club lost its cricket ground.

For a while the club played at Countess Wear in Exeter and then Teignbridge District Council was awarded grants and Tedburn St Mary was able to build its Recreation Ground, where cricket and football were played until the football club acquired its own ground.

So the Recreation Ground is now for cricket, has the hard tennis courts and an area for children to play. Many people helped to create this ground,

Among them was Don Fathers, cricket club chairman for several years and who still plays for Tedburn. Richard Kibbey was the first elected captain. He and his wife ran the village shop and Richard was not able to give the time. Bryan Rainbow took over from him.

Secretary is Matt Currey and anyone who would like to know more about the club can contact him on 07773 518 297.

A buffet was held the previous evening at the Kings Arms, Tedburn St Mary with people attending from all around the area. A minute's silence was observed for members no longer here and bouquets of flowers from both teams were laid the next afternoon, overlooking the game.
