ONE person walked away with seven of the 12 trophies to be won at this year’s Spreyton Flower and Produce Show.

Cleave Collins, who lives almost next door to the Village Hall where the show was held was that person, winning the cups for vegetables and flowers, both open and for villagers, as well as the cup for the exhibitor gaining most points overall.

A tiny flower arrangement in an egg cup won Angela Hawkins the Noel Broadbent bowl for the best in show. Angela’s floral tribute to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee won its class. Angela is show treasurer.

Other trophy winners were Michael who won the children’s cup and five-years-old Florence Banbury who won the cup for junior cookery.

Judith Talbot won the Coombe Cup for gaining most points in the section for wine and non-alcoholic drinks. She also won the RNIB salver for most points in the craft section. Her entries included a wonderful knitted Nativity scene that will be in the parish church this Christmas.

Trish Konig won the cup for gaining most points in the cookery and craft classes, also winning the special prize for her fruit cake.

Cleave’s onions won him a special prize as did his cactus dahlia.

Other special prizes were won by Florence Banbury, Hilary, Alethea, Caroline Burkin and Jenny Leash.

Due to covid restrictions, the last show had been in 2019 when there had been 499 entries. This year there were 307 but with the weather variations the organisers were very pleased with this sort of support. Quality was good even if the numbers were lower than usual.

The show was opened by Dr Peter Kennerley who has lived in Spreyton since 2002, doing locum work in the practices in Mid Devon. He had retired from a practice in Oxford. Dr Kennerley also presented the trophies.,

The next event in Spreyton will be the Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday morning of each month for the Village Trust Fund and then the Safari Supper on September 16 for which tickets are available from 07812 784627 or 07713 591691.
