SPRING is hopefully just around the corner and the members of a fly fishing organisation called South West Fishing For Life/Fishing For Life are getting eager to get out on the water and start fishing again!

This organisation which was set up 11 years ago is for people all with one thing in common - breast cancer!

Gillian Payne, secretary/founder of Fishing for Life, said: "Who would think fly fishing could help so many people move forward with their lives when they have been through the trauma of breast cancer or are going through treatments?

"The gentle exercise of casting helps to build up muscle and tissue around the chest area after surgery one physiotherapist at the local hospital said.

"The group offers support to members and the days help people’s well-being and they build new friendships with likeminded people.

"It’s a special ME time, away from everything, a time to relax in beautiful locations."

Gillian added: "We are proud to say we have set up 11 groups across the country in just 11 years!

"The sessions are all monthly and FREE to people who have suffered or are suffering with breast cancer."

She explained that all the groups are run by volunteers and qualified coaches who give their time.

Gillian continued: "Some groups meet on a Sunday morning or afternoon others, Saturday, Thursday and Tuesdays.

"The sessions all end with refreshments and a time to chat about the fish that got away!

"It’s not all about catching a fish, you don’t even have to fish to enjoy the support and friendship the organisation offers. There are always people to chat to and tea and coffee. Families and friends are welcome to come along to support, go for a walk and join in the refreshments but the fishing is just for people who have suffered from breast cancer.

"The organisation is run by a group of four volunteer trustees, all based on Exmoor near Wimbleball Lake, where the founder group is based.

"The 11 groups all have qualified coaches who are passionate about fishing and helping others."
