A LOCAL deaf rugby player is currently raising money for a rugby tour in South Africa.

Sophie Lyon (25), from Zeal Monachorum, plays with Ivybridge ladies as well as England Deaf Rugby Union (EDRU).

She was diagnosed with hearing loss in 2018 when she was just 19 years old, and has played for the England side since 2019.

“I’ve been playing rugby since I was 16 years old,” Sophie said. “Being a part of England Deaf has given me huge opportunities.”

The team will be taking part in the tour in August for 10 days, playing matches against South Africa, Wales and Australia.

The England team will also be carrying out some charity work and might even go on safari.

Sophie needs to raise £2,200 to cover expenses such as the flights, accommodation and kit.

Sophie works at Lidl in Okehampton and recently raised more than £600 by holding a tombola in the store foyer.
