Crediton Quins 107 - Exeter Athletic 0
WITH such a scoreline, 107 to Crediton RFC Quins to Exeter Athletic 0, you might imagine a very lengthy report.
After all 17 tries and 11 conversions should give plenty of ammunition for a wordy tale.
However, whilst the visitors never gave up, this was a total miss-match which, although helping our points difference and enhancing the individual try scoring feats, served very little purpose.
The game itself was shut down 10 minutes early and the fact that it took the Quins seven minutes to get the first score meant that all the points were scored in 63 minutes!
Had it gone the full distance then the likelihood is that we would have seen a record points tally close to 150!
Plucky as they were, Exeter Athletic were way out of their depth and had it not been for a few excellent covering tackles that saved what looked to be certain tries, then the score would have been even greater.
Of course, that is not to detract from a destructive and clinical performance from the Quins, I suspect on the day very few teams (if any) in the Division would have lived with them.
You can only play what is in front of you and, in what looks to be a tight league, every point is important. We had pace in most positions and the handling and support play was generally very good and when games are this one sided, the structure can go awry.
Fortunately, the Quins did not allow that to happen and certainly never took their foot off the gas.
Defensively, we were seldom challenged although over the next couple of weeks that will certainly change and, whilst we sit at the top of the league after this result, we travel to unbeaten second placed Sidmouth on Saturday and host fourth placed Tiverton the following week. Two games that will test us to the limits.
The lads from Exeter can hold their heads high for keeping going and it is to be hoped that they keep turning out each week and maybe find a level at which they will be more comfortable. We wish them well and hope the situation improves for them over the next few weeks.
Centre Sam Westcott bagged six tries, lock Josh Atkinson came up with three, fullback Freddie Borthen two, flanker Will Crang and his brother on the wing Jamie touched down once as did prop Joe Rees, flanker Sam Rowe, No8 Chris Hooper and lock Tom Mortimer. Scrum half James Dodge landed 11 conversions.
On Saturday, the top of the table clash at Sidmouth for the Quins and a real chance to make amends for the Cup defeat earlier in the season.
