Minehead were unable to bring a full team but fair play, they still brought out 12 credible players. The Cougars matched and we played 10’s with subs!
It was a very physical game where the Cougars had to play out of position a lot and both teams had to track and cover a lot of space on the field but it was a highly enjoyable game of rugby.
Early in the game, Minehead scored two tries and one conversion (12-0) but as our ladies found their footing, some brilliant handling had the girls fighting back, passing down the line until Lizzie Ryder made a break through where she scored a try and Rachel Mortimer converted (12-7).
After the reset, Lolly Cleverdon-Brend made a great run which led to a try for the Cougars (12-12).
Minehead made a big break and scored (19-12).
Great interception from Rachel Mortimer led to the ball being turned over and eventually led to an awesome try from Danni Phillips (19-17).
The team played a really supportive, selfless game and great set ups from players like Libby Baker led to a try for Rachel Mortimer (24-19).
More great runs from Grace Gillard with amazing support from Ellen Pearce led to another Cougars try and Rachel Mortimer converted (31-19).
Minehead played great defensively but still Rachel ran from our own half to score a well deserved try which was converted (38-19). Minehead’s hard work paid off with a try and conversion for them (38-26).
Finally, a great run by Danni who passed to Sophie Lyon who ran in the try. Libby converted making the final score 45-26.
An amazing game played by both teams and enjoyed by all!
Back of the match: Danni Philips, Forward of the match: Lolly Cleverdon-Brend, Hero of the day: Jess Courtney and Player of the game: Lorraine Harris.
Thanks to our coaches Gemma Carnegie, Mark Small, Mark English, Kev Ellis, admin Jen Mortimer, all our supporters, Sophie Rowe and everyone else who helps make games possible.
Next game is Withycombe away!
Cougars have been going for three years now and entered the Women’s NC 2 South West (West) league this year for the first time.
After the first couple of games Cougars were tusselling for top spot, but now after 10 games and half-way through the season, the ladies find themselves mid-table, being fourth in the league on 24 points, with Devonport at the top on 34 and Bideford ninth on nine points. A credible result so far!
NEW RECRUITS WELCOME
The ladies do have 30 signed on but are always looking to recruit new faces, no previous rugby experience necessary, just open to learning new skills, getting fit and having a laugh with a great bunch of ladies.
Training is every Wednesday at 7pm at Crediton RFC or why not pop along to the Cougars “Warrior Camp” on Sunday, March 8?
It will be a fun training session/introduction to rugby aimed at new faces, followed by refreshments in the clubhouse.
