NEWTON St Cyres Beer Engine loop relay race is back for its fourth year on Saturday, October 5, starting and finishing at the fabulous Beer Engine pub in Newton St Cyres.
The aim of the relay event is to bring the community together, have fun, support local community groups and advocate the benefits of the great outdoors and exercise, whether that be a fun relay race or a walk in the grass and trees or relaxing and enjoying the flowers and to raise money for the local community.
This year funds are being raised for Newton St Cyres Primary School and the Newton St Cyres Arboretum.
The primary school has been in the village for many years and moved to a new building in 2018.
The school PTA raises funds to provide covered outdoor space, play equipment and other unfunded resources for the school children.
The money raised will be contributed to the school PTA funds for playground shelters.
Newon St Cyres Arboretum has been open to the public for a number of years and is maintained by a dedicated group of village volunteers all year round to provide a safe and friendly space for all visitors.
The arboretum friends group have included wheelchair access, benches and a lookout space as well as keeping the garden under control.
The money raised will be contributed to the arboretum team to continue in the work they do to keep the arboretum open to all.
This year there will be a children's run of approximately one third of a mile and an adults relay race of approximately two miles which is affectionately known by local runners as the “Beer Engine loop”.
Both runs start and end at the Beer Engine, which will be open for refreshments on the day.
The children's run will be for individual runners (7-15 years) and split into age categories.
The adult race is for teams of three runners.
The children's run will be for individual runners between the ages of 7 years and 15 years. Children will run in age categories determined by the number of entries. The course is approx. one third of a mile.
