THE Seniors at Downes Crediton Golf Club are celebrating after some amazing success.

The club has been in existence for 46 years (since 1976) and during this time the club has not won a Devon county knockout competition despite entering teams every year.

The senior’s event is known as the Emerton-Court Trophy and is run by the Devon Men Veteran Golfers Association (DMVGA).

This year Downes Crediton Seniors entered a team as usual along with some other 33 clubs in Devon.

Andrew Chandler, Downes Crediton Seniors Captain explained: “Except for the final, a team of five pairs plays home and away.

“In the first round we beat Teign Valley GC, in the second round Royal North Devon GC before meeting Borringdon GC in the quarter finals.

“In the semi finals we were up against Tiverton GC who have won the Trophy previously.

“We lost the first leg at Tiverton but narrowly won overall on the return at Crediton.”

Andrew continued: “The final was played at Tiverton against Portmore GC who had also never won the Trophy.

“A tight match ensued with the result all square and only one pair left on the course.

“A heroic putt sunk by Crediton player David Cousin on the 17th green gave DCGC a famous victory.

“As Senior’s Captain this year I could not have felt prouder for the squad of players who had all contributed to such a significant win for the club.

“Special Congratulations go to Martin Howe who was Team Captain and was a wonderful motivator.”

Last week the squad were presented with “commemorative” shirts.
