Sandford 1 - Witheridge 2

JANUARY 11 saw Sandford AFC start out on the second half of 2024/25 season with an away trip to their neighbours Witheridge for a 2.15pm kick-off.

Sandford kicked off and within a minute the home side went close to scoring by missing a simple chance.

The away side’s first chance came after four minutes when winger Chris Hawkes shot over from a through ball by Sam Reeves.

Both sides had chances in a tight first half and the game became scrappy with a Witheridge player receiving a yellow card.

Then a Sandford attack down the right wing saw both centre forward Baker and the Witheridge full back receive yellow cards, the Sandford player lucky to remain on the pitch.

With the game moving towards halftime Sandford keeper Headley made a lucky save to keep the visitors in the game.

With seconds to go to the whistle Matt Baker scored with an assist from midfielder Stanbury. H/T 0-1 to Sandford.

The second half saw Sandford substitute scorer Matt Baker.

Five minutes later saw Witheridge pick up their third yellow card.

The 53rd minute saw the home side win a corner from which they forced the ball over the line, 1-1.

Sandford, playing up the slope, pressed forward looking for the winner leaving no cover at the back and were made to pay in the 75th minute when a break down the right side lead to the home side scoring their second goal.

The visitors tried hard to force the equaliser but at the final whistle it was Witheridge who took the points with a 2-1 win.

Sandford again paid the price for poor finishing up front and slack marking at the back.

At the moment there is no match on Saturday but that could change.
