CREDITON UNITED 1 - WESTEXE ROVERS 1

DEVON WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE

A DRAW was the fairest result in the end as a competitive game reached its ending at Lords Meadow on Sunday, September 8.

Both teams battled through wind and rain for most of the full 90 minutes and there was plenty of skill and determination on show.

From the start both teams were very attack minded and although the Crediton ladies played a good short passing game, it was Westexe who created more actual chances.

Midway through the half it was the visitors who opened the scoring as Amy Williams broke clear of the Crediton defence and shot into the left hand corner of the net giving Crediton goalie Keira Moran no chance for 0-1.

Crediton then started to put more pressure on and from a good move on the right it was Maddie Taylor who lobbed the Westexe goalie from wide on the right and the ball rested pleasingly in the bottom left hand corner of the goal,1-1.

That proved to be the last of the scoring but certainly wasn’t the last of the entertainment.

It amused me when the supporters got behind the teams and the well known cry of “man” on kept coming but “girl” on perhaps doesn’t have the same ring to it.

On the whole the game was orchestrated in midfield and for long periods both goalies were fairly quiet.

There was a good turn out from Westexe and the fans were noticeably vocal in their approach.

Both sides were clearly well organised and it was a credit to the coaches that fitness levels were consistent and heads did not drop even as the rain got harder towards the end of the match.

On the Crediton side Emma Cooper had a fine game at the back and Captain Erica Lane was a constant presence.

In attack in Molly Tompkins and Bethany Ebdy, they had willing runners and Maddie Taylor was a constant presence on the right.

Substitutions came and went but still the score remained at 1-1 and both teams can take heart from this seasons opener.

Crediton team: Keira Moran, Rachel Baker, Emma Cooper, Chloe Hartney, Katy Harkness, Erica Lane capt, Maddie Taylor, Antonia Nash, Sophie Young, Molly Tompkinsand Bethany Ebdy.
