BRAVING the wind, rain and even hail at times, Hayward’s Primary School’s heroic team of footballers took part in the second round of the EFL Kids Cup at Exeter City's training ground against the other group qualifiers.

Qualifying top of their group in the last round added expectation but also additional pressure which the team handled superbly.

They qualified top of their group in the week’s second round and progressed all the way to the final, only to be beaten 1-0, conceding their only goal in their winning 16 game run!

Teacher Scott Baker said: “This was an unparalleled record which impressed all at the event.

“Sadly, progression to the ‘Regional Finals’ was only for the winners of the final, meaning our journey ended here.

“However, the character and sportsmanship of the team was a credit to the school and made the school incredibly proud. Thanks to all of the parents who helped with transport and the players for their incredible efforts.”

Mr Baker added that the children in Year 5 have been really enjoying their Exeter City Community Trust football sessions.

He explained: “The children were over the moon to receive a visit from Exeter City Football captain Pierce Sweeney who oversaw one of their practical training sessions as part of the 'Joy of Moving' programme. Thanks to Ethan and Jake for organising this.”

More recently it was the turn of a team of Year 2 children to experience the fun at Exeter City's training ground for a Festival of Football.

Mr Baker explained: “The children were incredibly excited, especially when they got to experience the inflatable pitch, and their enthusiasm shined through in their performances.

“Our school was recognised by the coaches for teamwork and were awarded the 'Being Connected' award. Thanks to those who transported the children to and from the event. Well done Hayward’s!”
