CREDITON UNITED 2 - TORRINGTON 1
CREDITON completed the double over their North Devon opponents Torrington on Wednesday night, October 23, and in the process went up to seventh in the South West Peninsula League East table.
This was a last ditch affair and the referee did the lads from Lords Meadow a great favour as he played around 10 minutes of injury time, allowing Crediton just enough time to conjur up a winner.
This was a game in which they dominated for long periods, going close on several occasions.
The forwards however did not have their scoring boots on and in the second half, chance after chance went begging.
This profligacy nearly cost the Kirton before Will Burwood’s header saw the points heading back to Mid Devon.
The early signs were good for the home side and Lukey Wrights free kick went narrowly wide.
On 36 minutes it was 1-0 as the same player chipped the goalkeeper from just outside the box after a flowing move and a fine link up with fellow striker Kenny Ord.
Just on half time another fine move ended with Will Burwood shooting just wide.
So, as the players trooped in at the end of the half it was Crediton who were clearly in the ascendancy.
The second half was only a minute old when Torrington equalised against the run of play as a long free kick was headed across goal and slotted in at the near post by Liam Martin, 1-1.
Then a match changing incident occurred as the Torrington keeper Alfie Daniels was red carded after stopping a goal scoring opportunity.
Kenny Ord hit the bar and then a shooting chance was created for the same player but that too went west.
Shay Corrick fired a left foot shot wide and Kenny again missed one as the ball appeared to be caught between his legs.
Will Burwood shot well over as Crediton strove for the winner.
Then, just as a draw looked nailed on, Crediton won a free kick deep in the Torrington half and everyone surged forward into the box.
Lukey White fired in the dead ball and Will Burwood rose above the away defence and the ball ended up in the net.
It was no more that Crediton deserved having dominated this game for long periods.
