THE big fireball in the sky returned last Sunday (April 2) to escort the brave girls of Crediton Rugby Club’s U16s squad on their journey to Plymstock Albion Oaks RFC - this year’s venue for the Devon County RFU Cup Final.
An apprehensive, yet song filled bus journey carried the girls to meet fellow finalists, Ivybridge.
Both clubs having earned their place in the final by beating all in their path - something had to give.
During a very nervous first 20 minutes, Ivybridge took an early lead, which was well deserved.
The big stage took a few by surprise, but slowly and surely the Crediton nerves started to settle and the usual strength and composure started to come to the fore.
Team work and slick rugby soon dragged the Crediton girls back into the Cup Final.
Tries were swapped between both teams and heading into the final 10 minutes the score became level.
The stress levels on the sidelines could hardly be any higher, yet Crediton had more in the tank, with heads high and fire roaring in their bellies, a fine converted try in the final few minutes saw Crediton become Devon County Champions,
It was a magnificent game of rugby, not only for Crediton and Ivybridge, but for girls rugby as a whole.
Each and every one of those girls did themselves proud.
