MID Devon District Council is now using electro-chlorination with salt to clean the swimming pools at Lord’s Meadow Leisure Centre in Crediton.

Electrochlorination uses electrolysis of saltwater to make a disinfectant, which can then be used to kill harmful organisms in the water.

It is considered to be safer than traditional methods of cleaning swimming pools, as it does not irritate skin in the same way.

“Using salt is cleaner, safer and offers a more soothing swim for our customers to enjoy when swimming at our facilities,” a spokesperson said.

The council is also converting the pools at Exe Valley Leisure Centre in Tiverton to the new system.

Its leisure centres are now being run completely with renewable electricity, boosted by solar panels.

There are three council-run leisure centres across the Mid Devon district: Lord’s Meadow in Crediton, Exe Valley in Tiverton and Culm Valley in Cullompton.
