THE class of 2018 was welcomed back to Chulmleigh Community College on November 13, when the former students received their GCSE Certificates and Special Awards.

Following another record-breaking year for Chulmleigh pupils, in which they topped the charts for non-selective schools in Devon for EBacc average point score (also top in South West), Attainment 8 and Grade 4 and above in English and Maths, and were second in all other measures, the College said it was a wonderful to be able to recognise pupil achievements and wish them farewell and good luck for the future.

The evening began with a reception for parents, former pupils and staff in Dartridge Hall, followed by GCSE certificate presentations, and then the Special Award presentations.

The College Awards were generously presented by, or in memory of, ex-pupils, teachers, governors and members of the community.

During the past year, Marketing Co-ordinator Becky Huxtable has documented the history of the awards, in order that the stories behind them are not forgotten.

Becky said: “I felt it was very important that the reasons why people donated these awards are documented and remembered. Two in particular stand out: at this time of Remembrance, one was donated in memory of a soldier killed in the Falklands War – Cpl Andrew Uren.

"The Madeline Smith Memorial Art Cup was donated in memory of a former pupil who was killed in a motorbike accident in 1996.

"After an appeal for information about this cup on social media, Alison Montague, a friend of Madeline’s, got in touch to tell me the story.

"In a lovely twist to the tale, her daughter Izzy won the cup this year!”.

Outgoing Head Boy and Girl (Nathaniel Scarbrough and Tori Higglesden) spoke eloquently to open the evening, and guests and recipients were entertained with musical performances by flautist Meg Kelly and singer Breiya Pottinger (who is to appear on "The Voice" in the New Year).
