EAST Worlington Primary School has gone book mad in the last few weeks, with an enormous range of events arranged to fascinate, stimulate and engage the children of all ages, in a range of new and traditional books.
They kicked off their World Book Day/s with style, when they received a visit by the fantastic and talented Clara from West End in Schools who - to pick a few things off her impressive CV - helped to choreograph the Olympic opening ceremony and the 2015 “Take That” tour and has starred in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on London’s West End.
The children have enjoyed reading Gangsta Granny and Where the Wild Things Are and then attended workshops where they were able to develop dance drama to retell the stories.
On World Book Day itself, the children arrived at school dressed as their favourite book character and took part in a range of book-focused activities designed to help them find new books to read and have read to them.
Next the Crediton Community Bookshop arranged for the KS2 class to share the top 20 children’s books and the KS1 and pre-school children also had a special treat on March 10, with a visit from Amy Sparkes, author of “Monster Zoo”, “Goodnight Star” and her new Mermaids series.
Finally, Devon Libraries will be visiting on March 17, to work on the “Reading Roundabout” with the Oak class (KS2). The library service will take in a range of books from six genres and the children will be able to choose a book from each genre.
They then receive a certificate after completing this challenge.
Suzie Pinn, East Worlington Senior Teacher said: “The children have really loved these events and are excited by the ones coming up.
“Thank you to the PTFA for the purchase of some new books for the library, and for paying for the visit from West End in Schools. All in all we are all ‘Booked Up’.”
