AN urgent appeal has been issued for volunteers to step forward as treasurer or secretary of St Petrock’s Church at Clannaborough between Bow and Crediton.
Mick Richards explained: “St Petrock’s Church has stood for almost 1,000 years and it is believed the site pre dates Christianity as a place of worship.
“Many a walker on the Two Moors walk has taken refuge there from the elements.
“Monthly services are held using the traditional Book of Common Prayer, and has a healthy number of attendees.
“It is also used as a venue for a range of concerts.
“It is one of only a handful of churches in Devon that do not have electric lighting and is only lit by candlelight.
“We are blessed to have a number of volunteers who regularly help with maintenance and fundraising (of course we could always do with more).
“However, we are facing a real crisis, that could lead to its closure. We urgently need a Treasurer and Secretary.
“Regular attendance to service is not a stipulation. With only four meetings a year (including the AGM), the duties are light compared to other organisations.”
Mick said that a meeting will be held at the church at 11am tomorrow, Friday, August 18, to discuss the future of the church.
He added: “If you do not want to see the closure of this historic Church and think you might be able to help, please come along or contact me on: [email protected] or telephone 01363 82379.”
