THE story appeared in the Courier on Friday, July 31, issue 1044.
The story explained that the Crediton branch of Barclays bank will be closing in November.
Michael Watts, community Leader for Barclays Devon and Cornwall told the Courier: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.
“We must therefore evolve the shape and size of our branch network in response to changing behaviour.
“At Barclays Crediton branch, customer usage has continued to decline and nearly half of our customers now regularly use alternative branches, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch on Friday, November 27.
“We hope that the availability of branches at Marsh Barton and Exeter High Street, along with access to services at the local Post Office as well as our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers as we move out of Crediton.”
Most of the people I have spoken to say that the Crediton branch of Barclays bank is always busy and customers sometimes queue out of the door.
Crediton prides itself on its large number of small, independent businesses - how will they be affected?

What you told us …
I sometimes use Barclays bank for my kids and there are often people queuing out the door, yet the reason for closing the bank is that there aren’t enough customers using the branch! It’s a shame it’s closing – It will be missed.

It doesn’t affect us as our account isn’t in Crediton because we didn’t change it when we moved to Lapford. However, we do occasionally use the Post Office in Lapford.
Viv Bulley, Lapford
It’s awful that all the banks are closing in the town. We use HSBC and have found it physically difficult to use the branch in Exeter since the Crediton branch closed. If you want to pay money in you want to do it straight away and not have to leave it until your next trip into Exeter.
