A CEREMONY took place in Crediton on Thursday, July 20, to mark the installation of a plaque alongside a newly-planted tree in People's Park, Crediton.

The iconic Ukrainian Kalina bush was given by the town and area's Ukrainian guests as a thank you present to Crediton citizens and was planted in the Scouts' Memorial Garden last spring.

The writing on the plaque was decided by the Ukrainian community locally and reads: "From Ukrainian families with sincere gratitude to the residents of Crediton for their care and support during Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine.  24.02.2022".

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian people living locally said: "The Crediton community has indeed been particularly welcoming  - opening their houses, hosting and supporting our Ukrainian families during the last year.

APPEAL

"However, as the war continues with recently renewed bombing in many towns and cities, we would like to appeal for new sponsors and hosts.

"We currently know of a number of people seeking refuge within the safety of our area, so there is a shortage of hosts locally.

"If you decide to be a sponsor for the Homes for Ukraine Government's program, Mid Devon District Council will help you to get all the necessary checks.

"As a thank you for your help, you will receive a monthly payment. Single people do not lose their single status council tax benefit.

"If you would like to meet our guests and sponsors, come to the Crediton Conversation Café we run every Monday, at the Crediton Congregational Church, between 4pm and 6pm, where you will experience a warm English/Ukrainian welcome with coffee/tea and cake. Please feel free to contact us directly if you would like a chat about it."

You can email the local group via: [email protected] or telephone Jennie on 01363 773159.

Crediton Town Council has been thanked for funding the cost of the plaque.
