THE Sandford Slammer cycle event which took place just a few weeks ago has raised a grand total of £3,008, Chris O'Connor, the event organiser has announced.
Chris explained: "I am pleased to announce that this year’s event has raised a grand total of £3,008, this comprising of entries received, pasty/cake sales and personal donations.
"This morning I have transferred £1,504 to each of our two worthy recipients, The Devon Air Ambulance and Crediton and District Playscheme for children with additional needs.
"Once again, we the organisers cannot thank the local cycling community enough for turning up and supporting The Slammer.
"As well as individual participants we also had riders from several local clubs, these included many from BGE CC, Okehampton CC, EWCC, Scotch Egg Cycling Society, Tiv Velos, Rackenford Riders, Wellington Wheelers, Crediton Breeze and of course the hosts, the Sandford Syclepaths.
"In addition, several local businesses and individuals continued their support for The Slammer.
"They are (in no particular order), Torello Cycle Services, Barny Butterfield and Sandford Orchards, Rory Oliver of Rory Oliver Photography, The Sandford Gate Milk Company, Ernest Jackson, Simon W Bowen of Bowen’s Executive Travel, Quicke’s Farm, Meadowside Garage, Tesco, Morrisons, The Bike Shed and Withleigh Village Hall Committee.
"We are also indebted to Andrew Priddle, Mathew Theedom and all those involved with Sandford Cricket Club for accommodating and allowing us to host The Slammer at Creedy Park.
"My wife Lyn and I would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers, no matter in what capacity each individual helps, the simple fact is this ride would not happen without your fantastic support, you all do a fantastic job and play an equal part in the success of this event.
"To close, the vast majority of you will not be aware of personal losses suffered by Lyn, Age, Chris and Kris leading up to the event.
"In a tragic accident Lyn's mum Carole passed away in late August and on the Friday preceding the ride, Kris's dad Fred passed away peacefully at their home.
"Being active individuals who would give unconditionally with the expectation of receiving nothing each would have enjoyed seeing the smiles, hearing the laughter, thrilled with the monies raised and delighted to witness The Slammer going from strength-to-strength. Neither would have entertained us even considering cancelling the event.
"So, with the permission of all those involved it is my pleasure to formally close and dedicate The 2023 Sandford Slammer to the memories of both Carole and Fred.
"See you all in ‘24!!!"
