THIS Friday, March 17, will see talks by local historians on the theme of “Tudor Taxes and Georgian Fires, Crediton 1549 to 1743”.
The talks, arranged by Crediton History and Museum Society, will add a great deal to what we know about Crediton during nearly two centuries stretching from 1549 to 1743.
The first talk, by Dr Todd Gray, includes interesting items from the third volume of Devon Parish Taxpayers, published in January and released by Devon and Cornwall Record Society.
This book, edited by Dr Gray, includes a substantial section on Crediton.
In his talk, Todd will look at Crediton in the 1500s and early 1600s.
The talk will take place at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, 7pm for 7.30pm.
Tony Gale, whose essay on Tudor Crediton forms part of the book, will talk about some of the local people and places we learn about in its pages.
The second event is the forthcoming exhibition on Crediton and the Great Fire of 1743 at the town’s museum.
This exhibition, accompanied by a book due to be published in April, will reveal new insights about life in Crediton before, during and after the Great Fire.
Tony Gale’s talk will give a glimpse of some of the many stories that have come to light in the Society’s recent research, as a preview of the exhibition and the accompanying book.
