Traffic cones and beer kegs have been placed outside The Cross Hotel to keep pedestrians from using the pavement beneath the buckling wall.

“The A377 one-way system eastbound at Copplestone is closed for an indefinite period at the request of Mid Devon Building Control,” a Devon County Council spokesperson said.

“This is due to an unstable structure, three-way lights may create long delays.”

A Mid Devon District Council spokesperson said: “NMD Building Control has advised that the building is unsafe as there is evidence of movement internally, as well as signs of distress on the external render.

“Given the proximity of the building to the A377, Devon County Highways has put in place a road closure as a precaution until a full structural appraisal or temporary support has been provided.

“Please expect delays, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Traffic orders for the emergency closure due to “structural failing” give an anticipated finish of Monday, October 7.
