AN announcement that the Tiverton NatWest bank will close by the end of this year will be a blow to many Crediton people who transferred to the branch after the Crediton branch closed in June, 2018.

The Tiverton branch is among four in Devon that NatWest announced are to close, the others being at Tavistock, Exmouth and Plymouth.

NatWest has already announced that it is to shut 36 branches (34 NatWest and two RBS) across the UK by the end of July 2024.

Tiverton branch customers have been told that closing a branch is a difficult decision, not one the bank takes lightly.

It wrote to customers adding: "We understand that this branch closure may be challenging for many and we’re working hard to help prepare our customers, and our colleagues, for the closure.

“All your banking details including sort code, account number, standing orders and direct debits will remain the same and you can continue to use your debit cards, paying-in books, and cheque books.

"Only the branch address on your statements and any new cheque books will change.

"If you need to write to us, the address will be Natwest Exeter High Street, 59 High Street, Exeter, EX4 3DL.

“We will introduce a community pop-up site following closure where a local colleague will be available to support face-to-face conversations around your day-to-day banking needs, support you with setting up and using our digital services, provide information and advice on how you can use your local Post Office for cash based transactions, as well as provide advice on how to protect yourself against fraud and scams."

The Tavistock branch will close on October 18.

The bank said that no-one used the branch on a regular basis in the whole of last year, 2022. It was used by 105 business customers during that year.

It is suggesting that people instead visit Launceston to do their banking. This is open from Monday to Friday.

A NatWest spokesperson said: “As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking, because it’s faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives.

"We understand and recognise that digital solutions aren’t right for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no-one is left behind.

"We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them.”

The closure will leave TSB as the only bank in Tavistock.
