MORE than 50 people, in five teams, took part in the very first 24-hour overnight, Crediton Relay for Life in aid of charity, Cancer Research UK.
The five teams were the Boom-Ting, Bows and Arrows, Kirton Belles, Cheri Fitz FC 2nd's and The Walking Angels, all of who were supported by a small team chaired by volunteer Clare Thierens.
Two survivors of cancer, Peter Hosking and Trustee David Wakefield, helped to start the relay by walking the first lap of a course at The Rec at Lords Meadow.
The individuals who made up the teams took it in turns to walk around the track.
Teams were fundraising before and during the event.
During the 24 hours, many small events, such as karaoke, cake decorating, face painting, arts and crafts, a fashion show, quiz, five-a-side football, bands, DJ's, team stalls and a mini sports day were organised.
Chris Babb of Cancer Research UK, said Relay For Life is a global movement which originated in the US in the 1980's.
"Now there are more than 1,000 communities in 22 countries which stage Relay For Life fundraising events.
"In the UK 70 Relay For Life events will take place before the end of September 2010, helping to raise more than £2m for Cancer Research UK's lifesaving work.
"Relay For Life is a volunteer-led event and special recognition must be made for the commitment and dedication which Clare Thierens (Crediton's volunteer Relay For Life event chairman) has demonstrated over the last six months."
He said that Crediton was now one of nine locations in the South West where Relay for Life events are held.
"I hope this will be the start of many more in the future", he added.
One of the cancer survivors, David Wakefield, a trustee of Torbay Prostate Support Association, was full of praise for Clare and her committee.
"I hope the committee bring together the local community and honour, and remember, those who have been affected by the illness in some way."
The West Devon Emergency Group (WDEG) Communications Team, who were sponsored by Wenmouth Radio and the Red Lion, Shobrooke, assisted with many aspects of the event.
Chris Boult, from WDEG, was one of four volunteers who had head or beard shaves in aid of Cancer Research UK. The other three were Andy Heath, Lewis Cobb and Ralph Perriman.
A final total of how much has been raised from the efforts of those who took part has yet to be calculated but anyone who would like to make a donation can find out how by contacting Clare at: [email protected]">[email protected] .
