THE Recycled Shoe Planter Competition at Hayward’s Primary School in Crediton was revived this year by Year 4 class teacher, Mr Scott Baker.

It was originally started when Gill Ponsford worked at the school as a classroom assistant and it used to be a really popular competition that brightened up the school grounds every year.

As part of Reuse and Recycle the planters were made from a range of used footwear, from welly boots to boots with high heels and contain a selection of colourful plants and garden ornaments.

The children had great fun with their shoe planters and the finished products will be displayed around the school to brighten the grounds.

The competition was open to children from all year groups and everyone who entered also received a packet of flower seeds.

Mr Norman Ponsford, a keen gardener and husband to Gill, judged the competition and announced six overall winners who each won a ceramic owl planter (the owl is the school’s mascot), a packet of flower seeds and a certificate.

Norman also provided a wheelbarrow planter to the school with a commemorative plaque in memory of Gill (or Mrs P as the children fondly called her).
