CHERITON Fitzpaine and District Ploughing Association held its 78th annual Ploughing Match and Produce Show at Burrow Farm, Stoke Canon by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Ross May on Sunday, September 15.

It was a warm and sunny day and the 65 ploughmen, women and young people enjoyed ploughing in a 50-acre field, in ideal conditions.

The competitors came from across the South West, all ploughing with tractors.

Unfortunately no horse ploughing took place this year.
There were some wonderful entries in the produce, baking and handicraft competitions, their exhibits displayed in one of the farm barns.
Outside were root crop classes, hay, corn, field crops and many more.

The ploughing started at 10am, finishing during the afternoon, with individual plots being judged and then scored.
Gail Whalley, churchwarden at Cadbury Church, led the Ploughing Service and blessing of the plough, when everyone sung heartily “We Plough the Fields and Scatter”.
Champion ploughman was Anthony Retallack.
