DEVON and Cornwall Police is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads after as many as 17 serious crashes across the two counties in just over one month.
Nine people died and nine more suffered serious injuries between April 1 and May 6, police said.
There have also been multiple crashes in the Crediton area, mostly on the A377, but with less severe consequences.
“The past few weeks have been truly tragic,” Chief Inspector Simon Jenkinson said.
"The last thing our officers want to do is knock on any more doors to tell someone a loved one isn’t coming home.
“I’m urging all motorists – living locally or visiting on holiday – to adjust their driving in accordance with the road conditions; stick to a safe speed and take extra time to look out for other road users.
“Whether you are driving, riding or walking, please take extra care when out on our roads.”
