THE one-acre organic garden at Efford House at Efford near Shobrooke (EX17 1BJ), will open in aid of local charity, Hospiscare, from 2.30pm to 5pm on Saturday, August 3.
Penny Iffla, hostess, explained: “Hospiscare is a charity very close to our hearts, and we love to support it as much as we can.
“Our garden has a large amount of vegetables and soft fruit. It also has herbaceous borders, a pond and lots of lawn!
“Adding to the usual weather challenges we share our garden with hungry voles, the ever present slugs, and hordes of ravenous sparrows (that would devour all seedlings if they were not covered).
“We also have a couple of swallows nests which are far less troublesome.
“We felt very privileged that we had a young hare visiting the garden for a few weeks. Although he had a good appetite for my precious Larkspur and the lower leaves of French Beans it was a joy to see him.”
Penny added that there is a one-acre wetland and wildlife pond in the meadow which is home to moorhens and mallards and a visiting heron.
She said this is just a short, mainly flat walk from the garden.
Admission will be by donation to the charity and there is parking in a field by the house.
There will be drinks, and lots of delicious cakes, including vegan and gluten free. Also a raffle.
The garden is fairly accessible and there are toilets but these are not wheelchair accessible.
Dogs on leads would be welcomed.
